Bears play in fifth overtime game of the year.
GREELEY, COLO.- The Northern Colorado soccer team took on Portland State Friday at Jackson Stadium in a match that went 110 minutes, and would end in a, 1-1 tie. This is the Bears fifth match on the season that went into extra periods.
Â
In the first half Portland State would come out aggressive, firing off the first two shots of the match. UNC would get their first shot in the 11th minute from sophomore, Sidney Schroder who finished the night with only one shot in 27 minute of play.
Â
The Bears would come close to getting a first half goal in the 37th minute when junior defender Adrienne Jordan laced a shot high, bouncing off the cross bar, then cleared by the PSU keeper.Â
Â
In the first half both teams played very evenly, with UNC taking only two shots with one on-goal and the Vikings taking four shots with none on-goal. UNC led the half, getting one more corner than PSU, with two.
Â
Both teams entered the locker room all tied at zero.
Â
"PSU came out with a lot of energy in the beginning minutes, but as the half progressed both teams started to figure each other out," said head coach Tim Barrera.
Â
In the second half the Bears would come out hot. In the first five minutes the team got off three quick shots. UNC struck gold when freshman Jacqui Pulley, put a nice low grounded ball towards the right corner, beating the keeper for her first goal on the season.
Â
"I was just dribbling and Schroeder told me to take my space," said Pulley. "I saw some room, and took a shot with my left foot and it went in."
Â
The rest of the half both teams would play very aggressive. Portland State got off 12 shots in the half, landing four on-goal, while UNC would get eight shots off, landing seven on-goal.
Â
"It was a pretty typically conference game, with a lot of back in forth" said Barrera. "It was good to see Pulley, make a nice finish with the left foot giving us the early lead in the second half."
Â
The Bears maintained the lead the rest of the half until in the 85thminute, when Mackenzie Bean shot from the eighteen, landing it in the back of the net for her first goal on the season. Bean would finish the match with two shots with two on-goal.
Â
"Our defense is tough and works well together," said Jordan. "We will continue to get better, and stronger and work to close out games as a team."
Â
In the first overtime, both teams looked for the game winning goal. PSU would come out first with a shot, just missing high for the Vikings. UNC would try and strike in the 95th minute, when junior Rebecca Lancia took one of the seven corner kicks the Bears had on the day, but couldn't capitalize on the opportunity. Lancia finished the game with three shots landing two on-goal.Â
Â
The first overtime would come to an end seeing three shots and two corner kicks in the ten minute period.
Â
The second overtime period both teams would have a hard time getting anything going. Each squar would take a corner kick and one shot. Jordan cracked off a shot in the back in the 106th minute just missing high for the Bears.Â
Â
The match would come to an end, all tied at 1-1.
Â
"This is a really resilient team that fights," said Barrera "These girls have played a lot minutes, but continue to fight and work hard, and continue to bounce back."
