GREELEY, Colo. – Carl Iwasaki has been named the ninth head baseball coach at the University of Northern Colorado. Iwasaki played at NC from 1981 to 1984 under Hall of Fame Coach Tom Petroff and graduated in 1985.
Iwasaki spent the last six seasons as the head coach
at Austin College where he was twice named Conference Coach of the
Year in 2006 and 2007. His 2007 team won the SCAC
Conference and went on to the NCAA West Regional. He
comes to Northern Colorado with over 20 years of coaching in
Colorado, Hawaii, California and Texas and extensive recruiting
ties nationally.
Iwasaki, a Hawaiian native, has stressed the
importance of merging our Great West Conference athletic goals with
re-uniting the baseball alumni, facility upgrades, academic
excellence and recruiting goals to stress the importance of keeping
the State of Colorado high school baseball player at home to play
for the Bears while they graduate from this great
institution.
We had a tremendous amount of national interest in
this position from the high school, intercollegiate and
professional baseball community.
"I want to thank the entire search committee," said
Director of Athletics Jay Hinrichs. "Especially search chairs
Sarah Adams and Jimmy Henderson in spending countless hours working
our way down to four very talented baseball coaches for campus
visits.
"Coach Iwasaki is incredibly passionate about the
game of baseball and about UNC," Hinrichs continued. "He is
deeply committed to the development of the student-athletes in
every area of their lives."
