Mark de Swardt enters his second season with UNC swimming and diving after joining the program in the fall of 2022. De Swardt brings with him a wealth of experience from the Division I and international levels.
Â
Prior to joining UNC, de Swardt was a volunteer assistant coach at Ohio State during the 2021-22 season. That season, the Ohio State women won the Big 10 title, while the men finished second at the conference meet.
Â
A native of Durban, South Africa, de Swardt coached high school swimming and coached with the Seagulls Swimming Club in Durban, prior to his stint at Ohio State. During that time, he also coached elite triathletes, managed a triathlon team, and competed in four different Iron Man events.
Â
De Swardt was a Division I swimmer at Cleveland State (2008-2013). As a Viking, he won 11 individual Horizon League titles, and helped his team to a Horizon League championship in 2013. He also broke Cleveland State’s records in the 200 fly, 400 IM, 1000 free and 1650 free, of which the latter two are still unbroken.
