UNC Baseball Takes Game One Against Oral Roberts

GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado baseball rallied late with a pair of clutch home runs to secure a 7-6 victory over top seeded Oral Roberts on Thursday afternoon at Jackson Field.
Northern Colorado erased an early deficit and delivered its biggest swings in the final innings to take the series opener over Oral Roberts. After falling behind 3-1 through five innings, the Bears chipped away and tied the game in the sixth inning before surging ahead late. The momentum shifted in the seventh when Sam Pease launched a two-run home run to give UNC its first lead of the day at 5-3.
Oral Roberts responded with runs in the eighth and ninth innings to keep pressure on, but the Bears answered with the decisive moment in the bottom of the eighth. Brandon Sanchez crushed a two-run home run to left field, pushing Northern Colorado back in front, 7-4, and proving to be the game-winning swing. The Golden Eagles made one final push in the ninth with a two-run homer, but UNC held firm to secure the one-run victory.
Northern Colorado totaled 10 hits in the win, with production throughout the lineup fueling the comeback effort. Sanchez led the way, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, including the go-ahead blast in the eighth. Pease delivered a strong performance behind the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored, while Ethan Mooser added two hits of his own, including a solo home run, and crossed the plate twice. Brett Barber also contributed with a pair of hits and an RBI to help spark the Bears offensively.
On the mound, Northern Colorado relied on a two-pitcher effort to navigate a dangerous Oral Roberts lineup. Reece Wagner started the game and went 5.0 innings, allowing three runs while striking out three.
Mitch Haythorn earned the victory in relief, tossing the final 4.0 innings and striking out four while working through late pressure to close out the win.
