GREELEY, Colo.- Northern Colorado dropped a closely contested 2-1 decision to Colorado College on Sunday afternoon at Jackson Stadium. Despite the final score, the Bears put together a strong performance, showcasing intensity and cohesion as they prepare for a crucial stretch of road games.
The match started on a high note for Northern Colorado, as sophomore forward Sunnie Yarnell opened the scoring in the 10th minute with an electric finish, giving the Bears early momentum. The team continued to apply pressure and carried a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Early in the second half, Colorado College capitalized on a penalty opportunity in the 47th minute to equalize. While the Bears continued to create attacking chances, the Tigers struck again in the 67th minute, securing what would become the game-winning goal. Northern Colorado battled until the final whistle, generating several late opportunities but unable to find the equalizer.
With the loss, the Bears fall to 1-4-2 on the season. The team now turns its attention to a pivotal road trip, taking on South Dakota on September 11, followed by a matchup against South Dakota State on September 14.
"It was a disappointing day. I thought we played well in the first half and got the early goal, but we didn't start the second half well and that set the tone," said Head Coach Tim Barrera. "We had some strong individual performances in different roles, but overall, we're disappointed to give up a penalty and a late goal. Credit to Colorado College — they came out strong and brought early pressure. We're making progress in certain areas but have to clean things up before we hit the road".
Northern Colorado will aim to bounce back in their next game and return to the win column before closing out the non-conference slate.
