VERMILLION, S.D. – The Northern Colorado women's soccer team kicked off their road trip Thursday with a gritty 1-1 draw against South Dakota in a physical, high-energy match.
The Bears got on the board first in the 20th minute when leading scorer Lexi Tuite found the back of the net off a well-placed assist from Anneliese Wong. The Coyotes answered just five minutes later, tying the match at 1-1 in the 25th minute. Both teams entered the halftime break knotted in what was an evenly contested first half.
The second half turned into a defensive battle, with both sides creating opportunities but unable to convert. Northern Colorado's back line held strong, and goalkeeper Kaya Lindberg came up big with six saves to preserve the tie.
"Proud of our players for continuing to compete," said Head Coach Tim Barrera. "We got the early goal, they responded, but we kept battling. I'm proud of how the team stepped up, especially dealing with a player disadvantage. Kaya had a nice game. Overall, it was a good, solid effort with some good opportunities."
The Bears continue their South Dakota road swing Sunday as they head to Brookings to face South Dakota State.
Kickoff is set for 12 p.m MT.
