MISSOULA, Mont.- Northern Colorado Soccer (1-8-4, 0-2 Big Sky) continued Big Sky Conference play on Sunday afternoon, taking on the reigning regular-season champions, Montana, at South Campus Stadium. Despite a determined effort, the Bears fell to the Grizzlies (7-3-1, 1-1-0) 2-0 in a hard-fought match up.
Looking to challenge Montana's back line, Northern Colorado pushed forward with energy and intent, generating six shots over the course of the game and great looks off corners. The Bears worked to capitalize on attacking opportunities but were ultimately unable to convert their chances into goals.
On the defensive end, graduate student goalkeeper Maddie Smith played a pivotal role in keeping the Bears competitive, recording six crucial saves throughout the match.
Her performance between the posts helped limit the damage from Montana's aggressive offense, but the Grizzlies were eventually able to break through and secure the win.
"Tough one in Missoula but proud of the effort and how the team battled" said Head Coach Tim Barrera. "Good effort from a lot of players, we just needed to create more chances. Montana is tough at home but overall proud of the effort."
Northern Colorado will look to build on the performance as they continue their conference schedule.
UP NEXT
The Bears will travel to Flagstaff, Ariz to take on Northern Arizona on Sunday, October 5.
