BROOKINGS, S.D. – Northern Colorado women's soccer battled through a first-half weather delay and a potent South Dakota State attack, falling 6-3 on Sunday afternoon at Fishback Soccer Park.

The match kicked off on time but was halted with 3:02 left in the first half due to weather, resuming at 3:06 p.m. CT after a delay of more than an hour.

Despite the result, three different Bears found the scoresheet as Preslie Young, Jolee Irvin, and Taryn Rea each tallied goals. Irvin also added an assist for a three-point outing.

The Jackrabbits struck first in the 14th minute before Young equalized in the 32nd, finishing off a buildup from Alex Michael and Irvin. SDSU regained the lead in the 43rd, but the Bears quickly leveled again when Irvin scored just before the break off a feed from Samantha Carter to send the match into halftime tied 2-2.

The second half proved more difficult after UNC went down a player in the 52nd minute. South Dakota State capitalized with four unanswered goals over the next 30 minutes. Rea pulled one back for Northern Colorado in the 82nd, converting a penalty to make it 6-3.

Maddie Smith logged two saves in goal for the Bears, who turned five total shots into three scores with clinical efficiency.

Northern Colorado (1-5-3) continues nonconference play on Friday with a trip to the Cadet Soccer Stadium at the United State Air Force Academy. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
