Northern Colorado battles but can’t overcome South Dakota State’s late surge in 10–2 loss on Sunday
BROOKINGS, S.D. – Despite tallying nine hits and showing flashes of offensive promise, Northern Colorado (17-28, 8-16 Summit) could not keep pace with South Dakota State's (14-29, 10-13 Summit) high-powered attack, falling 10-2 in Sunday's series finale at Erv Huether Field.
The Bears trailed early after South Dakota State plated two in the first and added single runs in the third and fourth innings. Northern Colorado broke through in the sixth on a Jake King RBI single, trimming the deficit to 4-1. The Bears loaded up nine hits on the day, including multi-hit efforts from Carter Monda, Ethan Mooser, and Anthony Stellato, but struggled to capitalize with runners on base.
A six-run seventh inning by the Jackrabbits, fueled by a UNC throwing error and capped by Adam Benes' two-run homer, blew the game open. Northern Colorado added a run in the ninth on a South Dakota State fielding error, but the comeback bid fell short.
Starter Jake Storey (2-4) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits over 3.2 innings. Brady Hudson and Luke Guest combined for the final 4.1 innings, striking out seven but allowing six more runs.
UP NEXT
The Bears will travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for a Summit League series at Oral Roberts May 9-11.
