Northern Colorado Strikes Early but Falls to Hot-Hitting Jackrabbits

South Dakota State evens series with Northern Colorado behind 12-hit outburst and Siegert’s four-RBI day in Brookings.
BROOKINGS, S.D. – A six-run fourth inning broke the game open as South Dakota State (13-29, 9-13 Summit) evened the series with a decisive 11-2 win over Northern Colorado (17-27, 8-15 Summit) on Saturday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
Despite jumping out to a quick lead in the first, the Bears were unable to keep pace with the Jackrabbits, who scored in six of their eight offensive innings, including a three-run homer from Owen Siegert in the eighth to cap the scoring.
Northern Colorado grabbed the early momentum behind Jake King's two-RBI single up the middle in the first inning. However, that would be all for the UNC offense, which was held to just three hits on the day and kept quiet by SDSU starter Caleb Duerr (4-4) and reliever Jake Goble, who combined for nine scoreless innings after the opening frame.
The Jackrabbits tied the game in the second with a solo homer from Siegert, then surged ahead with a patient and powerful fourth inning, drawing two bases-loaded walks and recording back-to-back doubles to plate six runs. Siegert finished with a game-high four RBIs, while Sintek and Grawe each added two.
UNC starter Trevor Landen (1-4) took the loss, charged with six runs in 3.2 innings of work. The Bears used six pitchers in total, trying to slow an SDSU lineup that tallied 12 hits and five walks.
Northern Colorado will look to bounce back and take the series in Sunday's rubber match. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. CT in Brookings.
