Late Fifth-Inning Surge from Golden Eagles Sinks Bears in Tulsa
TULSA, Okla. – Northern Colorado (17-30, 8-18 Summit) built a brief midgame lead behind a two-run homer from Jake King and a multi-hit performance by Kai Wagner and Nick Barber, but Oral Roberts (29-19, 16-9 Summit) responded with a four-run fifth inning to take control and secure a 7-3 victory Saturday afternoon at Chapman Park.
After falling behind 2-0 on a third-inning homer from ORU's Cooper Combs, the Bears bounced back in the fourth when King launched a two-run shot to right field, tying the game. One inning later, Wagner delivered an RBI single to give Northern Colorado a 3-2 edge.
That lead didn't last. The Golden Eagles erupted in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Jack Schark, followed by run-scoring hits from Keaton Campbell and Ethan Fender, putting ORU in front 6-3. An insurance run in the eighth extended their advantage.
Trevor Landen (1-5) was charged with the loss after allowing four earned runs across 4.2 innings. Relievers Hunter Gibson, Brady Hudson, and Dyland Smith combined to finish the game, with Hudson surrendering one unearned run over 2.2 innings of solid work.
Offensively, the Bears tallied 11 hits, including three from Wagner and three more from Barber, but they were unable to string together scoring opportunities in the late innings. Oral Roberts reliever Jared Ure (2-1) earned the win in relief, while Weston Rouse picked up his first save of the season with 2.2 scoreless frames.
Northern Colorado will aim to avoid the sweep in the series finale on Sunday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. MT/1 p.m. CT from Chapman Park.
