Bears shine at Oregon Open with school records and top-25 NCAA marks in Eugene
EUGENE, Ore. – Northern Colorado track and field made noise Friday at the Oregon Open, led by a pair of standout performances from Kiana Van Haaren and Jerome Campbell.
Van Haaren shattered the UNC women's long jump record, leaping 6.24 meters (20'5.75") to win the event and edge out the previous school best of 6.23m (20'5.25"), set by Alisha Allen in 2015. The mark ranks No. 23 in the NCAA this season and puts Van Haaren in the conversation as one of the top jumpers in the Big Sky Conference.
The junior from New Braunfels, Texas, also competed in the 100 meters, placing eighth in 12.59.
Campbell delivered a national-caliber performance of his own, winning the men's 110-meter hurdles in 13.54 seconds. The time is not only a season best—it ranks No. 7 in the NCAA and No. 1 in the Big Sky.
Northern Colorado's depth was on display throughout the meet. Donovan Castillo clocked 47.40 for fourth in the 400 meters, while Edgar Garcia took fourth in the 100 meters at 10.75. Floyd Samuels Jr. (21.89) and Nathan Plant (1:52.76) added ninth- and tenth-place finishes in the 200 and 800 meters, respectively.
On the women's distance side, Shantell Hafner turned in a strong double, finishing eighth in the 800 meters (2:16.52) and 13th in the 1500 meters, where her time of 4:32.15 now stands as the No. 8 performance in program history.
"We competed hard against some of the top Power Four programs in the country, and our Bears stepped up," said Director of Track & Field Wayne Angel, "Jerome Campbell cruised to a win in the 110 hurdles, while Kiana Van Haaren not only won the long jump but also broke the school record. We had solid performances from Shantel Hafner in both the 1500 and 800, and Nathan Plant ran well in the 800 meters. Donovan Castillo also made a strong improvement in the 400 meters. Northern Colorado showed up and represented today."
