UNC Sets Stage For Future
GREELEY, Colo. - The Northern Colorado Women's Basketball team wrapped up the 2024-25 season with a 14-17 overall record and a 6-12 mark in Big Sky Conference play. Despite the challenges, the Bears had several standout moments, including a thrilling 67-60 overtime victory at BYU in November, marking Head Coach Kristen Mattio's 200th career win.
Â
Northern Colorado also found success in the Big Sky-Summit League Challenge, securing wins against St. Thomas and North Dakota. In conference play, the Bears picked up key victories over Montana, Eastern Washington, Idaho State, Sacramento State, Portland State, and another win against Eastern Washington.
Â
The most memorable game of the season came on November 17 when the Bears took down BYU in overtime on the road. The victory was a statement win for the team and a milestone achievement for Coach Mattio.
Â
The Bears entered the Big Sky Tournament as the No. 9 seed, where they battled past No. 10 Portland State with a gritty 53-50 victory in the opening round. However, their tournament run ended against top-seeded Montana State in a tough 92-60 loss.
Â
Statistically, Northern Colorado finished fourth in the conference in offense, averaging 65.1 points per game for a total of 2,017 points. Defensively, they ranked fifth in the conference for scoring defense, holding opponents to 62.5 points per game. The Bears were efficient from the field, finishing second in field goal percentage at .431 and second in three-point shooting at .354. Additionally, they excelled at defending the perimeter, ranking second in opponent three-point percentage by holding teams to just .298. The Bears also saw a significant rise in fan engagement, with attendance increasing by 21.7% from last season.
Â
Despite the ups and downs of the season, Head Coach Kristen Mattio expressed pride in her team's perseverance and growth. "This group showed tremendous heart and dedication all year," Mattio said. "From the very first game to the conference tournament, they bought in, worked hard, and proved they belonged among the best in the Big Sky."
Â
Individually, London Gamble was recognized for her outstanding contributions, earning a spot on the 2024-25 Big Sky Women's Basketball All-Conference Honorable Mention team.
Â
With a solid core of players returning next season, including Aniah Hall and Gabi Fields, the Bears are looking to build on their experiences and take a step forward in the 2025-26 season. The foundation is set, and Northern Colorado Women's Basketball continues to push forward with high expectations for the future.
