Pals Makes Biggest Move of Round Two

Bears Sit in 10th at Vaqueros Intercollegiate after 36 Holes
PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico – Westin Pals gained two spots on the field with his 74 in the second round of the Vaqueros Intercollegiate – hosted by UTRGV – at the Iberostar Playa Paraíso Golf Club (par 72/6,701 yards) Monday.
Pals opened with two on the 144-yard, par-3 sixth. He dropped to 4-over par on his round, with five holes remaining but birdied the 375-yard, par-4 first. Following a par on each of the next three holes, the graduate student from Castle Rock, Colorado, sank a birdie putt on the par-5 fifth and tallied a 36-hole total of 76-74—150, placing him 30th with 18 holes remaining Tuesday.
UNC, which tallied a 301 in Sunday's opening round, dropped to 10th after two rounds, with a 305, totaling 606 for the two rounds. The Bears trail Wichita State in ninth by two strokes and lead 11th-place Western Carolina by the same margin. SMU and UTEP lead the 15-team field with a 3-under par 573.
Antti Vahvaselka, backed up his solid performance Sunday with a 73, enters the final round with an even-par 71-73—144. He matched the four birdies in the first round but sat at 2-over par midway through his circuit Monday, with two birdies and a pair of double bogeys. Following three pars and a bogey, Vahvaselka built momentum with a birdie, three pars and a birdie to remain in ninth place.
Palmer Mutcheson fired his second-consecutive 77 of the tournament for 154, falling to 46th.
JaeSeung Na tallied 81 swings Monday, totaling 156 through the first two rounds, while Talan Gover completed the scoring for the Bears with an 83 in the second round and 170, with 18 holes remaining.
Cooper Tate, competing as an individual backed up his 82 Sunday, with an 81 Monday.
The teams conclude the tournament with an action at 8:30 a.m. ET/6:30 p.m. MT shotgun start Tuesday.
