Castonguay Drives in Game Winner on Sac Fly
Tony Castonguay delivered the game-winner on a sacrifice fly for the Bears (5-4). Ethan Mooser blasted his first career home run and Luke Guest recorded the first win of his career.
With tallies in the first and third frames, UNC built a 2-0 advantage. Castonguay opened the scoring with a two-out solo home run – his first as a Bear – over the leftfield wall in the first. Kai Wagner plated Carter Monda with a one-out single in the third, doubling the Bears advantage.
The Wolf Pack moved in front with three runs in the home half of the third and pushed the margin to 4-2 with a marker in the fifth.
Mooser's two-run blast in the sixth sliced the deficit to 5-4. Nevada gained control with one in the bottom of the frame and added two more in the seventh.
Guest shut down the Wolf Pack's offense, tossing two scoreless innings and allowing the Bears to rally. He retired six of the eight batters he faced, fanning one, walking one and hitting one with a pitch.
UNC evened the contest at 7-7 in the eighth when the first five Bears reached safely, with three scoring.
Dalton Miller reached on an error to lead off the frame and moved to second on a base-on-balls to Craig Kenney. Brandon Sanchez loaded the bases with a base knock. An RBI single by Mooser, followed by a 2-RBI knock off the bat of Monda, scored the first three batters.
Mooser opened the tenth with a free pass and moved up 90 feet when Monda reached on a hit-by-pitch. Wagner filled the sacks with a base-on-balls, setting the stage for Castonguay. He lined out to right field and plated Mooser from third with the eventual game-winner.
Jack Tuttle recorded his league-leading third save. He worked a scoreless tenth, with one strikeout and secured the victory for UNC.
Monda, Jake King, Miller and Mooser inked two hits each, while Kenny and Mooser scored twice.
Murphy Geinger made the start for UNC and settled for a no-decision after tossing 5.2 innings. He allowed five runs – four earned – on seven hits and two walks, with eight strikeouts.
The Bears and Nevada resume the series with a doubleheader Saturday at 12:05 p.m. MT.
