Slow Start Dooms Bears

PORTLAND, Ore. – The University of Northern Colorado men's basketball team came up short against Portland State on Saturday afternoon, falling 82-71 at Viking Pavilion.

Isaiah Hawthorne and Jaron Rillie led the Bears' offense, each scoring 19 points. Langston Reynolds added nine points and six rebounds. UNC shot 42.6% from the field and 36.4% from three-point range but struggled at the free-throw line, converting just 11 of 18 attempts.

The Bears fell behind early, trailing by as many as 15 points in the first half. They managed to cut the deficit to 11 at halftime, heading into the break down 39-28.

UNC mounted a strong push in the second half, trimming the deficit to just three points at 48-45 with 13:35 remaining. However, Portland State responded with an 11-2 run, stretching the lead back to 12 with just over ten minutes left. Despite the Bears' efforts to stay in the game, the Vikings maintained control down the stretch to secure the win.

The loss drops Northern Colorado to 19-8 overall and 11-3 in Big Sky play.

The Bears will look to bounce back when they return home to face Eastern Washington at Bank of Colorado Arena on February 20 at 6 p.m.
