GREELEY, Colo. – The University of Northern Colorado Athletics Department has named Stevo Poulin the Luna's Taco Student-Athlete of the Week following his dominant performance at the Southern Scuffle.
Poulin, a redshirt junior from Ballston Lake, N.Y., went a perfect 6-0 over the weekend to claim the 125-pound championship. In doing so, he became just the fourth wrestler in UNC history to win a Southern Scuffle title and achieved back-to-back victories at the high profile tournament.
Poulin's impressive run included victories over two nationally ranked opponents. He defeated No. 23 Antonio Lopez of Oklahoma—a Big 12 foe Poulin may face again at the conference championships—before topping No. 22 Spencer Moore of North Carolina. Poulin also secured two tech fall wins, including a commanding 20-4 victory over Caleb Uhorchuk from Army in his opening match and a 17-1 triumph over Cameron Stinson of North Carolina. His weekend also featured a major decision over Jayden Carson (Little Rock, 16-5) and a solid 4-1 decision against Tristan Daugherty in the final.
"Stevo did a phenomenal job of capturing his second consecutive Southern Scuffle Championship," said head coach Troy Nickerson, "It is a great start to the New Year and we are excited to see what he is capable of this semester."
