Poulin Wins Southern Scuffle Title

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Stevo Poulin won the 125-pound title, while three other members of the Northern Colorado squad placed at the Southern Scuffle, hosted by Tennessee Chattanooga, Sunday at McKenzie Arena.
Dominick Serrano placed second at 133 pounds, while AJ Heeg took second at 184 pounds. Benji Alanis recorded an eighth-place finish at 149 pounds. The Bears finished eighth in the 22-team field, scoring 73.5 points, 6.5 points behind No. 7 The Citadel and two points ahead of No. 9 Virginia.
Poulin successfully defended his 2024 title, winning the fourth individual championship in the history of the program at the Southern Scuffle. He became the first Bear to claim two individual titles at the event.
The Ballston Lake, New York, native recorded technical fall victories in his first and second bouts, before he inked a major decision in the third match. In the quarterfinals, Poulin recorded a 4-1 decision over Tristan Daugherty of North Dakota State. He defeated his second Big 12 foe in succession with No. 23 Antonio Lorenzo of Oklahoma in the semifinals, before scoring a 5-0 triumph over No. 22 Spencer Moore from North Carolina in the title bout.
After receiving a bye in the first round, Serrano rattled off four-straight decisions and reached the championship round. He defeated No. 17 Ethan Oakley of North Carolina 4-1 in the semifinals, before falling to No. 9 Nasir Bailey of Little Rock by the same tally in the final.
Heeg advanced to the quarterfinals with a bye and two decisions. He moved to the semifinals with a major decision over top-seeded and 18th-ranked Gavin Kane of North Carolina. Facing his second-consecutive Tar Heel, Heeg tallied a 4-2 triumph, before falling to Zack Ryder of Penn State in the final.
Alanis opened with a fall in his first-round match and a 12-9 decision in the round of 16. He dropped to the consolation round after suffering a 7-3 setback to Campbell's Wynton Denkins. His victory over Layton Schneider of Oklahoma secured a top eight finish.
