GREELEY, Colo. – Chad Castillo joined the University of Northern Colorado Swim & Dive coaching staff as an assistant coach, focusing on the sprint events, UNC Head Swim & Dive Coach Lisa Ebeling announced Tuesday.
Castillo spent the previous two seasons at the University of Arizona, as an assistant and lead sprint coach.
In Tucson, Arizona, Castillo trained two 2024 US Olympic Trial qualifiers, one in the 50-meter freestyle and one in the 100-meter butterfly. A third member made the Azerbaijan Olympic Team in the 50m freestyle. He directed the training for student-athletes that broke the men's 200 Medley relay record and tied the men's 200 Free relay record, while one of his male student-athletes registered the fastest relay split in school history.
Castillo's duties away from the pool included overseeing academics, where the women's team earned The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association Team Scholar All-America Honors. As the recruiting coordinator, he collaborated with the staff to identify, contact and secure 20 high-level recruits for the 2024-25 school year. Other roles included tracking the Countable Athletically Related Activities (CARA) for the men's team and maintaining their compliance with NCAA standards. He developed and implemented a swim camp with 56 registrants (ages 8-18), earned over 20k and employed five student-athletes.
Before his time with the Wildcats, Castillo led the La Paloma Country Club swimming program, where he established a top three age group program in Tucson and the top 15 in Arizona. Team membership expanded from 20 in 2019 to 120 members by the summer of 2023. He coordinated all swim team programming (ages 4-18) and mentored three assistant coaches with tasks and weekly feedback.
Castillo coached at multiple high schools and club teams over the last 15 years. His certifications and training include Arizona Department of Education Secondary Science Teaching; Red Cross CPR/AED; Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches; USA Swimming Athlete Protection & Concussion Protocol Training.
