Bears Close Season Strong; Fall Short in Championship Game

TULSA, Okla. – Wins and losses often determine the success or failure of a season, with both describing multiple storylines by the 2024 Northern Colorado team.
"For this group of young men to play in the championship game is extremely special," head coach Mike Anderson said. "We played a challenging early season but they never gave up and trusted in the process and each other.
The final curtain fell on the season with an 11-4 setback against Oral Roberts Saturday at J.L. Johnson Stadium in the Summit League Championship game.
Picked last among the five teams eligible to compete for the Summit League championship in the preseason poll, UNC qualified on the next to last day of league play. The Bears continued their run by knocking off the top two seeds in the tournament to reach the championship Saturday.
"I am proud of this team," Anderson said. "Playing for conference championships should be our expectation, so we will continue to hard and improve."
Oral Roberts jumped in front 4-0 before the Bears recorded an out in the first inning. UNC went to the bullpen and called on Trevor Landen, who retired three of the four batters and let his offense go to work.
Garrett Fisher drove in two in the bottom of the first with a double and cut the deficit to 4-3 on an RBI double by Caden Wagner.
Landen kept the Bears in the game at 6-3, when he left with two outs in the fourth, but a grand slam in the sixth opened a seven-run gap.
Brandon Sanchez scurried home on a passed ball in the sixth for the Bears final tally.
Eight of the nine Bears in the starting lineup registered one hit, with Craig Kenny joining Fisher and Caden Wagner with a double.
