TULSA, Okla. – Jake Storey composed a masterpiece in Northern Colorado's 4-2 victory over top-seeded Omaha in the first round of the Summit League Championship at J. L. Johnson Stadium.
The sophomore from Frisco, Texas, improved to 3-4 on the season and tossed a career-high 7.2 innings. He scattered seven hits and allowed two runs, one earned, with one walk and five strikeouts. Storey posted the longest outing of the season by a Bears' starter this season.
Carter Monda opened the scoring with an RBI single back up the middle, plating Craig Kenny, who led off the third with a base knock. Omaha tallied the equalizer in the bottom of the frame.
UNC pulled ahead for good with three runs – all with two outs - in the fifth and Storey shut down the Mavericks' offense. Monda beat out an infield single, scoring Jackson Romero and pushing the Bears ahead 2-1.
Kai Wagner pushed the gap to two when his liner found enough space between the bag and a diving first baseman and bounded into the right-field corner for an RBI double. He scored on a single to center off the bat of Garrett Fisher.
Omaha cut the deficit to two with an unearned tally off Storey in the eighth. After a lead-off single, Storey retired the next two Mavericks, before head coach Mike Anderson called on Jack Tuttle from the bullpen. Following a passed ball, the Mavericks pushed across their second run of the contest.
After a one-out knock in the ninth, Tuttle secured his first save this season by retiring the next two batters. He induced a flyout, before punching out the Mavericks leader in batting average, with a called third strike.
Monda paced the offense with three hits, a run scored and two RBIs. Kai Wagner and Fisher finished with two hits each. Kai Wagner tallied a double, with a run scored and one driven in, while Fisher added an RBI. Kenny singled and scored, while Romero doubled, with a run scored.
The Bears became just the fourth team to win the opening round game in the last 25 tournaments.
UNC takes on Oral Roberts – the third seed and tournament host – at 5 p.m. Thursday. The Golden Eagles defeated No. 2 North Dakota State 11-3 in the other first-round game Wednesday.
Omaha and North Dakota State meet at 11 a.m. in an elimination game.
