GREELEY, Colo. – Murphy Gienger earned MyGreeley.Com UNC Student-Athlete of the Week, after pitching Northern Colorado into the Summit League tournament for the first time since joining the league for baseball in 2022.
The Castle Rock, Colorado native tossed 7.0 innings and allowed two runs on four hits and one walk, while striking out six in the Bears' 5-2 victory over North Dakota State Friday, May 17. He matched his season highs in innings pitched and strikeouts. Gienger improved to 5-3 on the season, making his 21st appearance, including five starts.
UNC entered the weekend with a half-game lead over South Dakota State for the fourth and final spot in the Summit League tournament. The Bear's magic number dropped to two with a home loss by the Jackrabbits against Omaha Thursday, May 16. Coupled with South Dakota State's second loss to the Mavericks in the series, UNC clinched a tournament berth behind a dominant performance by Gienger.
The Bears, seeded fourth in the Summit League Tournament, open against top-seeded Omaha at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Tulsa, Oklahoma, May 22-25. No. 2 North Dakota State and No. 3 Oral Roberts face off at 6 p.m. on the Golden Eagles home field.
