UNC Qualifies for Summit League Tournament

Bears Defeat NDSU 5-2
FARGO, N.D. – Murphy Gienger pitched Northern Colorado into the Summit League Tournament with a 5-2 victory over North Dakota State at Newman Outdoor Field Friday.
The Bears offense staked Gienger to a 5-0 advantage after three turns at-bat. The Castle, Rock, Colorado native matched his season high with 7.0 innings and six strikeouts, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk.
Caden Wagner cracked the scoreboard with a two-out single in the first inning, driving in Carson Gross and Kai Wagner.
Gross lifted a fly to center in the second and increased the Bears' advantage to 3-0 on a sacrifice, scoring Branden Sanchez, who led off the frame with a double. Jackson Romero upped the cushion to 4-0 when he scored from second on a base knock off the bat of Kai Wagner.
Caden Wagner registered the second-consecutive lead-off double for UNC and the Bears played small ball to score the fifth run of the game. Sanchez moved Wagner to third with a sacrifice bunt and Craig Kenny drove him in with a sacrifice fly.
The Bison tagged Gienger for a pair of runs with two outs in the sixth. After retiring the first two hitters, North Dakota State notched a single, a triple and another single, trimming the deficit to 5-2. Gienger struck out the next batter, holding the margin at three and recording a quality start. In the seventh, he worked a two-base throwing error to the first batter and handed the 3-run advantage over to the bullpen for the final six outs.
Jack Tuttle worked a scoreless eighth and gave way in the ninth after allowing a single to lead off the frame.
Jake Carvajal relieved Tuttle and sat down three of the four batters he faced, issuing a walk and striking out one.
The teams wrap up the series in the finale at 1 p.m. Saturday.
