ST. PAUL, Minn. – Jackson Romero and Austin Bunn both hit a home run and combined to drive in five runs in the series opener Friday.

Romero blasted the third home run of his career – the first in 2024 - and drove in three in the Bears 10-7 loss to St. Thomas at Koch Diamond. Bunn clobbered his sixth longball of the season and added a pair of RBIs.

Romero went 3-for-4, with a run scored, while Bunn crossed the plate once, with three driven in.

Carson Gross, Garrett Fisher, Craig Kenney and Jake King each tallied a knock.

Bunn put the Bears up 3-0 with a home run in the first inning. Caden Wagner worked a two-out walk and Fisher reached after being hit-by-pitch. Bunn deposited the 2-2 delivery over the fence in left-center.

After allowing three in the third and one in the fourth, UNC responded with two in the fifth and moved back in front.

King plated Fisher, with a bouncer through the left side of the Tommies' defense. Kenny scored on a sacrifice bunt by Romero and nudged UNC back in front at 5-4.

St. Thomas pushed ahead 7-5, with three runs in the home half of the fifth and added another in the sixth.

Trailing 8-5, Romero led off the eighth with a solo blast, trimming the margin to two. A walk by Miller, a bunt single from Gross and Brandon Sanchez reaching on a hit-by-pitch, loaded the bases with no outs. Wagner walked on five pitches, but the next three batters went down in order and the score remained 8-7 in the Tommies' favor.

St. Thomas added two runs in the bottom of the frame.

The Bears return to Jackson Field for the final weekend series on the 2024 home slate, when they host South Dakota State May 3-5.
