Messingham Leads UNC at GCU Invitational

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Gage Messingham paced Northern Colorado with a 3-under par at the Grand Canyon Invitational on the GCU Golf Course (par 71/7,239 yards) Tuesday and Wednesday.
Messingham opened at 1-over after shooting a 72 and 71 over the two rounds on day one. He closed with a 4-under par 67 Tuesday, for a 210 total. Messingham tallied 11 birdies and an eagle on his way to a four-way tie for 14th.
The Bears finished 11th at 6-over-par (287-288-283—858), seven strokes behind seventh-place Drake and UT Arlington, while Creighton placed ninth with 852 and Valparaiso in 10th (853). Austin Peay netted a 12th-place finish at 864.
Pietro Boeris and Westin Pals shot identical scores, tied with five others for 49th.
Boeris completed the first circuit at 1-under, with a 70, before a 72 in the second round placed him at even par. He fired a 4-over par Wednesday for a three-round total of 217. Boeris tallied six birdies over the event.
Pals (75-69-73—217) opened with a 4-over in round one, before playing the final 36 holes at even par. He tallied 11 birdies, including 10 over the final two rounds. Pals recorded 1-under-par on holes one through four in the second round.
TJ Shehee and Antti Vahvaselka rounded out the scoring for the Bears with 220 and 221, respectively.
Shehee opened with two birdies to card an even-par 71 and went 4-over par over the last 36 holes. He closed Tuesday with a 76 and tallied a 73 Wednesday, completing the event in an eight-way tie for 63rd.
Vahvaselka equaled four other competitors at 8-over par. He netted nine birdies and an eagle en route to a 221 (74-77-70).
