PORTLAND, Ore. – University of Northern Colorado suffered a setback against Portland State in the Big Sky Conference opener for both sides at Hillsboro Stadium Friday.
Morgan King found the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career in the 63rd minute, knotting the score at 1-1. She stepped to the penalty dot and buried the attempt into the lower-right corner of the goal.
Mia Norman and Riley Kaali-Nagy registered the two best scoring opportunities for UNC in the first half. Norman launched an attempt from just outside the box, sailing just over the crossbar in the second minute. An attempt off the boot of Kaali-Nagy two minutes later missed wide left.
A fingertip save prevented Norman from putting the Bears in front on an attempt from 40-yards out on a set piece with seven minutes remaining.
In the 26th minute, the Vikings grabbed the early advantage on a penalty kick. They netted the winner with 94 seconds remaining.
FROM HEAD COACH TIM BARRERA
"That was a tough one. I was pleased how we got ourselves back in the game and created a few potential game-winning chances. Bummed for the players with how we ended up losing the match. Quick turnaround but excited to get a home match Sunday.
