MACOMB, Ill. – Northern Colorado defeated Western Illinois 4-2 in the Summit League series opener Friday afternoon.
Trailing 2-1 in the top half of the third inning, Jackson Meier drilled a two-run home run to put the Bears in front for good.
Not to be outdone and for good measure, Meier homered again in the fifth inning, this time a solo shot.
As a team, the Bears collected eight hits and drew five walks.
Jake King, batting leadoff finished 3-for-4 and drew one walk. Caden Wagner, Craig Kenny, and Carson Gross each added a hit. Kenny also recorded an RBI.
The Bears received another standout effort on the mound from Dylan Smith. The true freshman tossed six and one-third innings, scattered six hits, allowed two runs, and two walks, and tied a season-high with six strikeouts.
Trey Cruz and Kevin Sharp each tossed one and one-third, with Sharp picking up the save opportunity.
The two teams return to the diamond Saturday at noon for game two of the three-game series.
