GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Three UNC records fell as the Northern Colorado track and field team wrapped up competition at the Tome Jones Memorial, hosted by the University of Florida, this Friday and Saturday, April 14-15.
Sophomore Regina Mpigachai set two school records, in the women's 800m (2:04.98) and 1500m (4:21.55), while Greeley native Jesse Hayward broke the school record in the men's 800m (1:49.99).
"I was very impressed with Regina today," director of track and field Wayne Angel said. "She was stellar in the 1500m and 800m, breaking both school records in the process, and she now leads the Big Sky in both events as well."
Mpigachai claimed the top finishes for the Bears at the prestigious national event, taking seventh in the 800m and eighth in the 1500m.
"Greeley native Jesse Hayward is finally coming into his own," Angel added. "He broke the school record in grand fashion, as his 1:49.99 bested former UNC great and national champion Wayne Patton's record of 1:50.40 set in 1997."
In addition to the three school records, numerous other UNC athletes set personal bests.
Moise Bennett set a new PR in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.59. Wendira Moss set new personal bests in both of her events, clocking in at 24.10 in the 200m, and 55.09 in the 400m.
The men's 4x400m relay team also set a Big Sky leading time, as Raphael Egbuchilem, August van De Weijer, Edgar Garcia and Hayward set a group best time of 3:11.49.
"August and Raphael were outstanding with similar times of 46.54 and 46.57," Angel continued. "They now lead the Big Sky with those times. Wendira had a personal best, which moves her in the top five of the conference. Moise Bennett also stepped up in the 400 Hurdles with a personal best of 55.59. I was also very pleased to see Chloe Rylance back on track with her outstanding performance in the 1500 meters (4:31.03). Assistant coach Stormie Sickler has done a wonderful job of getting her back on track after her accident in the
fall".
"It's always fun to be a part of the Tom Jones Invitational. We held our own against some of the best teams in the country. We're starting to build a little bit of momentum for ourselves this outdoor season, and today really showed that, with the way that we performed".
