Egbuchilem Breaks UNC Record En Route to 400m Second Round

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Northern Colorado freshman Raphael Egbuchilem broke the school record for the men's 400m on Wednesday night at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field West Regional; posting a time of 45.79, which placed him seventh overall in the event's first round. He broke the previous UNC record of 45.91 which was set by Alex Wesley in 2018.
Egbuchilem was the only representative from an FCS institution to qualify for the second round of the 400m, and was one of two from a non-Power Five institution.
On the women's side of events, UNC's Regina Mpigachai finished the 800m with a time of 2:09.87 on Thursday night. Unfortunately, she failed to advance to the second round of the women's 800m.
The second round of the men's 400m is set to begin at 7:50 p.m. (MT) on Friday, May 26. The top 12 finishers will advance to the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 7-10 in Austin, Texas.
The day's events will be televised live on ESPN+.
