UNC Takes on Portland State in Opening Round of Big Sky Tournament

Opening Tip
• The 8-seeded Bears enter the postseason taking on 7-seed Portland State in the first round of the 2023 Big Sky Men's Basketball Championship on Saturday, March 4, at 8 p.m. (MT).
vs the Vikings
• The Bears are 15-19 in their Division I history against Portland State, but have won the last three meetings. UNC defeated the Vikings in last year's Big Sky tournament, winning 86-79 in a semifinal matchup.
• Northern Colorado defeated Portland State in Portland on Jan. 14 by a score of 69-67. The team's last played each other on Feb. 9 in Greeley, as the Bears went on to beat the Vikings 88-79. In that contest, four Bears scored in double digits, and were led by points from Daylen Kountz and 20 points from Dalton Knecht. Kountz shot 61.5% from the field, hitting 8-of-13. UNC was 35-for-60 (58.3%) on the night, and shot 18-for-28 (64.3%) in the second half. The Bears out-rebounded the Vikings 38-32.

Daylen Kountz led the team with a season-high 27 points and seven rebounds. Dalton Knecht finished second on the team in scoring with 18 points. Matt Johnson II was third in scoring with 12 points. UNC had six blocks, including three by Theo Hughes. The Bears scored 50 points in the paint, compared to just 36 by ISU.
Leading the Pack
• Senior guard Dalton Knecht has posted 17 games this season in which he has led the Bears in scoring.
• Through 30 games this season Knecht leads the Big Sky for scoring, averaging 20.1 points per game, which also ranks 25th in the nation. Knecht is third in the Big Sky for three-point percentage (38.9%).
Freshmen Bests
• Freshman Brock Wisne had a career-best night at Sacramento State (Jan. 12) putting up 12 points, shotting 5-for-11, including hitting one three pointer.
• Fellow freshman Langston Reynolds set career-highs in points (12), minutes played (17), field goals made (5), three-pointers made (2), and steals (1) in the loss to Montana State on Jan. 5.
