Bears Rally Late but Fall Short at San Diego
11/29/2023 11:50:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Northern Colorado rallied from 10 points down with 5:15 remaining before falling to San Diego 74-72 at Jenny Craig Pavilion Wednesday.
Riley Abercrombie led three Bears in double-digit scoring, tallying a season-high 17 points, with eight rebounds. Brock Wisne netted 15 points, with eight boards. Jaron Rillie dropped in 11 points. Saint Thomas paced the squad with six assists.
With four seconds remaining, San Diego missed two free throws that could have iced the game. After the second miss, Abercrombie grabbed the rebound and raced up the right side of the court, unleashing a half-court heave just before the buzzer went off. His toss hit the backboard and fell harmlessly to the floor.
Despite Sand Diego outshooting the Bears 48% to 29% from the floor in the first half, UNC went to the locker room down just one. The Bears forced 11 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes and converted those into 11 points, overcoming the poor shooting. UNC led for 19 minutes in the first half.
COACHES QUOTE
"I thought our guys competed hard," head coach Steve Smiley said. "We just made too many little mistakes that added up over the course of the game, coupled with a shooting night that was not great for us. We must quickly find a way to tighten down on some details to make a jump forward."
