GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Opening the year at the Colorado Mesa Intermountain Shootout, freshman Maria Erokhina posted an individual win to highlight action for the Northern Colorado swim & dive teams.
With a time of 1 minute, 4.67 seconds, Erokhina's gold came in the 100-yard breaststroke with BYU's Mackenzie Miller hitting the wall .03 later at 1:04.70. The time moves Erokhina into the No. 9 position on UNC's all-timer performance list. Bryanna Ungs, the school record holder in the event, finished with a 1:05.36 for sixth place.
Anna Austin had a pair of top performances for the Bears. Austin placed second overall in the 1,000 freestyle with a 10:34.96 while a 1:55.46 in the 200 freestyle was good for fourth place.
In the 50 free, the Bears went 2-3 with Ali Jackson (24.15) and Saana Liikonen (24.25) registering early season teams less than a second off their career lows.
"As always with an early season meet we had a lot of ups and downs today. It was fun to see our newcomers race and we have a ton of potential to build on," Head Coach Lisa Ebeling said. "There was some hesitation going into several of our swims that we don't normally see with this group and as a team we were a little flat. I'm Looking forward to another opportunity on day two to race tough and improve on some of our technical details."
The second day of competition at the Intermountain Shootout will begin at 10:30 a.m on Saturday.
