Irwin captures gold at Intermountain Shootout

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Northern Colorado record holder Payten Irwin closed out the opening weekend of the swim & dive season with an individual title to highlight the second day of competition at the Intermountain Invitational on Saturday.
Payten completed the 200-meter fly in 2 minutes, 6.10 seconds to win the event by more than a full second over runner-up Abigail Hardy (2:07.11) of the Air Force. Irwin holds the all-time school mark in the event with a 1:58.71.
Irwin also placed second overall out of 36 individuals in the 100-meter fly with a 57.23.
Maria Erokhina added a pair of top-5 finishes for the Bears. The freshman placed third in the 200-meter breaststroke with a 2:23.67 and added a fifth-place result in the 50-meter breaststroke after coming in at 30.43.
Just behind Erokhina in the 200, Bryanna Ungs placed fifth with a 2:25.81.
The Bears will continue their season at home on Oct. 14 when they take on New Mexico State University in the first Western Athletic Conference dual of the year. Competition is set to begin at 4 p.m. at the Butler-Hancock Pool.
