WOLCOTT, Colo.—Another round and another golfer stepped up for Northern Colorado with the women's golf team recording a 6-over 294 on the final day of action at the Golf Week Red Sky Classic on Wednesday.
With both individuals carding 1-over 73s, Timbre Shehee and Amy Chitkoksoong provided the low rounds of the day for the Bears to help the team jump one spot in the final standings.
Northern Colorado (306-312-294—912) ended the 54-hole tournament in 17th place after surpassing Eastern Michigan's club over the final tour of the Fazio Course at the Red Sky Golf Club.
The Bears also gained seven strokes over the next nearest competitor as Little Rock (293-315-302—910) held off UNC by two strokes. Just six swings ahead of UNC, fellow Big Sky opponent Idaho placed 15th.
Ending with a 15-stroke advantage over second place, No. 25 ranked Pepperdine (285-279-282—846) ran away with the tournament title over Kennesaw State (289-292-280--861).
Marija Jucmane (74-72-74—220) sandwiched 2-over 74s around a middle round of 72 to lead the Bears. Jucmane tied for 22nd place out of 100 competitors.
Chitkoksoong gained five spots on the leaderboard with her final round and finished tied for 32nd. Louise Dahle (75) and Carolina Fallotico (77) rounded out the UNC contingent.
The Bears next take to the links on Oct. 24-26 when they travel to the University of Hawaii's Wahine Invitational to be played at the Kapolei Golf Club.
"It was much better today. We had 20 birdies as a team today so that was a pretty impressive showing. If we limit the big numbers going forward we are in a very good place," UNC head coach Clayton Sikorski said. "Overall, it was a great learning experience for a young team at a tough venue. We are excited to get back to work and prepare for Hawaii."
