GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado Softball head coach Ben Garcia has announced he is retiring as head coach on Monday.
"It has been a pleasure and honor to have served as UNC's Head Softball Coach for the past four years," said Garcia. "Coming into this position, I wanted to help make a difference, and I think we have made positive strides to develop Northern Colorado softball to be a strong competitive Division I program.
"It is with bittersweet sorrow that I walk away from a passion that stems over forty years of my life, but I look forward to my next adventure with my family. I would like to thank the UNC Softball alumni, donors and fans for making me feel welcomed from day one and continuing to support the program throughout."
Garcia has led the Bears for the past four seasons, stacking up over 50 victories in that time.
"I want to thank coach Garcia for his service over the last four years," said Director of Athletics Darren Dunn. "I am proud of our student-athletes in our softball program and the direction we are headed. Coach Garcia has had long career and is ready to spend more time with his family. We wish him and his wife, Beth, all the best in their future endeavors."
Eleven different Bears earned All-Conference Honors under Garcia during his tenure. He also led UNC to three Big Sky Tournaments, including a run to the championship game in 2019.
This season, Garcia's Northern Colorado squad pieced together 23 victories, its most since 2018, and handed Weber State its only conference loss of the season.
Prior to UNC, Garcia spent four seasons with Colorado Mesa, compiling a record of 169-49, three consecutive RMAC regular season titles and two straight tournament titles.
