UNC men's basketball heads to Daytona Beach for the CBI
GREELEY, Colo. – Who wouldn't want to take a trip to Daytona Beach right now? For Northern Colorado men's basketball it's not for fun, but a business trip as they will compete in the Roman's College Basketball Invitational (CBI). UNC takes on Florida Atlantic on Sunday afternoon to open the CBI.
Opening Tip
- The 2021-22 season continues for UNC at the Roman College Basketball Invitational (CBI). The Bears are the No. 12 seed in the tournament.
- This is UNC's first appearance in the CBI. The last time Northern Colorado played in a postseason tournament was the 2018 CIT which they won.
- Daylen Kountz was named to the Big Sky All-Tournament team after his performance in Boise. The senior averaged. 24.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists while shooting 46.8% over the three games.
- He is averaging 21.2 points per game and ranking 10th in the nation. In Big Sky play he averaged 21.9 ppg. He has 21 20-plus points per game. Kountz earned All-District honors from the USBWA and NABC.
- Matt Johnson II earned third team All-Big Sky this season and is ranked by the NCAA for scoring (13.8 ppg, 346th), assists (3.7, 182nd) and assist-to-turnover ration (1.70, 184th).
- Dru Kuxhausen leads the Big Sky for three's per game (2.94) and second for three-point field goal percentage (42.2%). That ranks him in the top 35 nationally as well.
- The Bears are averaging 78.2 points per game to rank second in the Big Sky and 28th in the nation.
- Northern Colorado ranks third in Big Sky in field goal percentage (47.3%) and leads the conference in three-point field goal shooting (38.3%). They rank in the top 35 in both categories in the nation.
Scouting the Owls
Florida Atlantic enters the CBI with a 19-14 record under fourth year head coach Dusty May. The Owls fell in the CUSA Tournament to eventual champion UAB 80-66.
FAU likes to shoot the three ranking 38th in the nation with 833 attempts on the year. Not only do they take a lot of threes, but make a lot averaging 8.8 per game.
The duo of Alijah Martin and Michael Forrest lead the team scoring 13.9 and 13.2 points per game. Both have made over 80 threes this season.

With a win Northern Colorado will face the winner of the Stephen F. Austin-UNC Ashville game on Monday, March 21st at 1:30 pm.
