UNC men's basketball kept its season going with a 74-71 win over Florida Atlantic Sunday
DAYTONA Beach, Fla. – The Bears march on as they took down Florida Atlantic 74-71 in the first round of the Roman College Basketball Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
Daylen Kountz had his 23rd 20-point game of the year while Bodie Hume and Kur Jongkuch each added in a double-double.
Kountz finished with a game-high 23 while Jongkuch scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Hume had 11 points and rebounds.
It was an even game throughout as the teams were tied 10 times and exchanged the lead 13 times. UNC held a two-point advantage at the half thanks to Kountz's coast-to-coast finger roll just before the horn.
The Bears kicked up their offensive efforts in the second half shooting 61.5% from the field.
As both teams battled back and forth in the second half it was a Dalton Knecht and-1 that gave UNC the lead for good with 2:23 remaining.
Kountz scored five straight down the stretch to push the lead to two possessions, but FAU had a shot at the end down three with two seconds left to tie it. Guarding the inbounder on the baseline, Hume tipped the pass to end the game and keep the Northern Colorado season going.
What They Said
Head Coach Steve Smiley
"I'm really proud of the guys for not only winning today but how they've approached this entire week. We've gotten better in practice this week, and I think that showed today, especially on the defensive end. Our overall effort was tremendous, starting with Bodie and Kur combining for 23 rebounds. Down the stretch, we made just enough plays to beat a really good FAU team."
Stat of the Game
Coming off its season-low shooting percentage, Northern Colorado returned to its normal form shooting 52.6% on Sunday.
