Welre Oliver, Qwazon Al-Khaliq and Tyler Thimsen help UNC rank fourth in the nation for triple jump
NEW ORLEANS – Northern Colorado men's triple jump squad is ranked No.4 in the United States Track and Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association National Squad Computer Rankings, as announced Monday afternoon. The Bears enter the week with a combined total of 198-10 and average jumps of 15.15m.
Led by Assistant Coach Ed Loyd, the Bears feature three athletes that are ranked in the top five of the Big Sky Conference. Welre Olivier in first (15.59m), Qwazon Al-Khaliq third (15.13m) and Tyler Thimsen fifth (14.99m). Olivier is currently ranked 36th in the NCAA.
"We are thrilled about our current ranking. Their hard work, patience and dedication are starting to pay off," said Director of Track and Field Wayne Angel. "Even though the weather and practice logistics precluded us from being at our best, we still found a way to make the best out of our current situation".
The Bear squad only trails Purdue, Houston and Oklahoma in the current national poll standings.
Northern Colorado will be splitting squads this week, with distance stars Melodie Leroudier and Regina Mpigachai will compete in the mile at the Meyo Classic at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. The remainder of the team will be competing at the New Mexico Classic in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
