Men's Hoops hosts Sacramento State for Kids Day

UNC men's basketball returns home on Saturday
GREELEY, Colo. – Saturday is Kids Day inside Bank of Colorado Arena. The Big Sky leading Bears host Sacramento State at 2 pm. The game is the annual Kids Day with added youth-oriented attractions including face painting, a balloon artist and more including free youth tickets using the promo code "KIDSDAY" online at UNCBears.com/Tickets.
Opening Tip
- Northern Colorado remained undefeated in Big Sky play defeating Southern Utah 91-81 on New Year's Day.
- UNC is along atop the Big Sky Standings as the lone undefeated team at 3-0.
- Dru Kuxhausen was on fire against SUU scoring a season-high 25 points making 7-of-14 threes and adding in four assists.
- The Bears made 17 threes as a team in the win.
- Bodie Hume recorded his second 20-plus point game of the year with 20 points including five three-pointers. He was one rebound shy of a double-double.
- Ball movement was key for the Bears against SUU as they had 19 assists. Matt Johnson II led the team with five. He added in 16 points.
- Big Sky leading scorer Daylen Kountz had 18 points and stuffed the stat sheet with three rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal.
- Sacramento State was scheduled to play a game on Tuesday at Oregon State, but it was canceled due to COVID protocols with OSU.
- Northern Colorado's game against Portland State on Monday has been postponed to January 31 due to COVID protocols within the PSU program.
Scouting the Hornets
Brandon Laird took over as interim head coach just before the season started when long-time coach Brian Katz retired. Laird was the head coach at Menlo from 2006-09 on the Division III ranks.
Laird's Hornets are 4-6 on the year looking to get back on track having dropped four of the last five games with the one win coming against his former school in Menlo. The Hornets are 0-3 in Big Sky playing having played the same three teams as UNC. Their closest game was a two-point loss to Montana State on December 4.
Senior Bryce Fowler leads Sacramento State with 16.3 points per game and is second in rebounds with 5.6. The Hornets are a grind it out style team averaging just 63.5 points per game.
Around the Big Sky
There were two games on Thursday both won by the road team. Montana and Montana State traveled to Eastern Washington and Idaho, respectively defeating the two. Montana nows sits alone in second place with a 4-1 record.
