GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado Volleyball's beginning to the 2021 season has reached a historic milestone. For the first time in program history, the Bears have received votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll.
"We are excited that we were able to pull out some close matches," said head coach Lyndsey Oates. "We could just as easily be 2-3 if we weren't 3-0 in the fifth set. The votes really just mean people are recognizing our conference and our tough preseason schedule."
After defeating the Big Ten's Northwestern in five sets to open the season, UNC began last week with another dramatic five-set win over in-state rival Colorado State for the first time in 39 years. Days later, Oates' crew went a perfect 3-0 at the Denver Invitational that featured Northeastern, Mercer and a Pioneer team that had received votes in the AVCA Top-25 the week before.
Along the way, seniors Kailey Jo Ince and Kyndall Feather swept the Big Sky Player of the Week awards. Ince drew up 59 kills, 28 digs, three aces and four blocks to earn the offensive honor while Feather tallied 54 digs, eight assists and three aces to pick up the defensive award.
Northern Colorado hosts Texas Tech on Wednesday, September 8, and San Jose State on Thursday, September 9, before heading to Boulder to face a Colorado team that is also receiving votes in the AVCA Top-25.
