Bears sweep Griz for first Big Sky win of the season
9/23/2021 8:45:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
GREELEY, Colo. – A sweep is a sweep. Northern Colorado took a few extra points in the second and third sets but the Bears kicked off its 2021 Big Sky Campaign with a sweep over Montana, 3-0 (25-23, 30-28, 27-25).
Lyndsey Oates' squad started the match in terrific fashion. Kyndall Feather, fresh off reaching 100 career aces, started the set No. 1 with another as UNC ran out to a quick 5-1 lead.
Midway through the opening frame, the Bears held a 15-9 advantage, hitting over .500.
Though Montana made a run near the tail-end of the set, six kills from Rachel Hickman on eight attempts and zero errors helped UNC seal the first set win, 25-23.
Hickman finished with 13 kills on .276 hitting.
A sluggish start to the second had Northern Colorado playing from behind for most of the set. In fact, it wasn't until three straight points from the Bears to make it 20-18, that UNC had any type of breathing room.
Three blocks from the Grizzlies extended the set well past the 25-point mark. Twice, the Bears staved off set points until a kill from Kailey Jo Ince and a Montana error gave UNC the coveted 2-0 lead.
Makenzie Harris found her groove in the third frame. The Eaton, Colorado native dialed up a crucial six kills in set No. 3 alone to go along with 3 blocks.
Defensively, Laura Katarzynski racked up 12 digs as did Ince, all while Cece Huhn supplied five block assists on the night.
Harris' 7.0 points in set three helped the Bears hold off a late charge from the Griz. In the end, it was Michaela's Boon's first ace of the evening that dealt the final blow for Montana and handed UNC its first Big Sky sweep of the season.
