Melodie Leroudier sets program 5K record
Lincoln, Neb.— The Northern Colorado women's cross-country team made headlines on Saturday at the 2021 Greeno/Dirksen Invitational as graduate senior Melodie Leroudier clocked a time of 17:16 seconds breaking the seven-year-old record of 17:48 seconds set by Rikki Gonzales in 2014. The Pleasanton, California native finished second overall in the Red Division which was for Division I competitors. The women finished third overall tying the second highest finish ever for UNC at the Greeno/Dirksen Invitational.
"Our ladies raced tough today," Director of Cross Country & Track & Field Wayne Angel said. "Their focus and attention to detail paid off today. They raced with a ton of grit and most of them had personal bests today. I am extremely proud of them. They beat two regionally ranked teams in Wichita State (10) and South Dakota (15) of the Mid-West region."
Fellow grad senior Claudine Blancaflor, freshman Shantell Hafner, freshman Chloe Rylance and sophomore Julia Brown assisted Leroudier in scoring the 108 points for the third place finish.
Blancaflor was 13th overall with a time of 17:58, Hafner, 25th overall with a time of 18:34 and Rylance was 33rd with a time of 18:52. She was closely followed by Brown who was 35th with a time of 18:53.
Senior's Emily Wilson and Alison Zigler were UNC's sixth and seventh runners 39th and 40th with times of 19:01 and 19:22 respectively.
"The women will continue their commitment to excellence," Angel said. "In due time, they will reap the reward of all of their hard work."
Freshman Logan Cole shined for the men as he set a personal best in the 8k leading his Bear pack with a 25th place finish and time of 25:36. Sophomore Jesse Hayward, freshman Isaac Rascon, and senior Timothy Chambers and freshman Colton Magnuson assisted Cole in the team scoring.
"The men kind of struggled today. It was their first 8k of the season. We have a lot to work on. Time and patience will take care of everything that we need to fix," Angel said.
Hayward placed 39th with a time of 26:18, Rascon finished 44th with a time of 26:42, Chambers placed 46th with a time of 27:25 and Magnuson placed 47th with a time of 27: 57. They were followed by Aidan Anastas and Ethan Brenneman who placed 48th and 49th with times of 28:07 and 34:09 respectively.
"We are still in the strength phase of our training program," he said. "As soon as we begin our sharpening phase, we will see great improvement in performances and times. Every meet that we compete in is a stepping stone to getting better."
What's Ahead
Once again the Bears will be off for two weeks before heading to Arkansas for the always competitive Chile Pepper Festival on October 2.
