Bears rebound with sweep over old rival North Dakota
9/18/2021 10:43:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
PEORIA, Ill. – Facing old Big Sky foe North Dakota, the Bears made sure to familiarize the Fighting Hawks with what Big Sky Volleyball is all about, sweeping UND, 3-0 (29-27, 25-19, 25-16).
Freshman Annette Baker has come into her own during the Bradley Invitational. The Fayetteville, Georgia native had already set a career-high for kills against Saint Louis and Baker came out firing once again in the opening set against North Dakota.
Eight, yes eight, kills from Baker in set No. 1 kept the Bears alive as the Fighting Hawks clawed tooth and nail past the 25-point mark.
Kailey Jo Ince found six kills, the final of which dealt the fatal blow for UND, giving UNC an important first-set win.
Ince finished with a match-high 16 kills while Baker piled up 15 on .462 hitting.
Northern Colorado cranked up the serving effort to create a little separation in the second set.
Three aces, including two from Laura Katarzynski helped UNC creep out to a bit of cushion.
Meanwhile, Baker and Ince continued to be the 1-2 punch that Lyndsey Oates needed. Both surpassed the double-figure kill mark in the second set and Lauren Strain added three block assists as the Bears cruised to a two-set lead.
North Dakota jutted out to an 8-4 lead early in the third set, forcing the Bears to call timeout.
From there, it was all Northern Colorado. Baker continued to impress on the outside and UNC's servers dialed up five aces in the third frame alone.
Katarzysnki led all Bears with four aces, Syd Cole tied a career-high with three and Kyndall Feather added two. All of which added up to a three-set sweep for Northern Colorado.
