A Year in Review: Wrestling

Wrestling continues to make noise in the Big 12 and nationally and 2021 was no different. Northern Colorado started the year with a win at Wyoming propelling them into the NWCA Top 25 for the first time in 51 years. UNC continued the success on the mat throughout the year with four NCAA Championship qualifiers. The Bears not only had a strong year in competition, but also in the classroom setting records for NWCA and Big 12 All-Academic honors.

Northern Colorado wrestling earned its first ranking in the NWCA polls in 51 years. UNC climbed all the way to No. 17.

Once again head coach Troy Nickerson and the UNC wrestling program earned multiple bids to the NCAA Championship. Four Bears represented the Blue and Gold in Mosha Schwartz, Andrew Alirez, Jackson Hemauer and Alan Clothier.

Jackson Hemauer became just the third wrestler in program history to advance to the Big 12 Championship match. Competing at 174 lbs, Hemauer upset the No. 2 and 3 seed on his way to the final match.

The Bears had a record five NWCA Scholar All-America honorees in 2021. Jace Koelzer, Mosha Schwartz, Nick Knutson, Alan Clothier and Jacob Seely all earned the honor.

It was not just success on the mat this year for UNC, but off as well. A record 14 Bears were named to the Academic All-Big 12 team.

UNC had eight placers at the Big 12 Championships in Jackson Hemauer (2nd), Alan Clothier (4th), Mosha Schwartz (4th), Jordan Robison (7th), Chris Sandoval (7th), Jace Koelzer (8th) Dalton Robertson (8th) and Jacob Seely (8th).

Northern Colorado had its highest team finish at the Big 12 championships taking seventh place. The Bears scored 70.5 points.

Northern Colorado wrestling earned its third straight NWCA Scholar All-American Team rankings checking in at No. 20 this season
