LEADING OFF
Head coach Carl Iwasaki's Bears are coming off a non-conference weekend against Utah. Though UNC didn't come away with a victory, the three-game series was full of individual bright spots from the likes of Cooper Rust, Ian Torpey, Garrett Fisher and Hayden Heinze.
With two weeks left in the WAC schedule, a crucial stretch of games remains for the Bears. Needing at least a ninth-place finish to qualify for the conference tournament, UNC sits tied for eighth with Seattle.
The Northern Colorado pitching staff continues to flex its muscles in terms of strikeouts in the 2021 season. With an average of 8.9 strikeouts per game, the Bears rank No. 1 in the WAC.
UNC is no stranger to the extra-base hit. With the help of Shaydon Kubo, who has a WAC-leading four triples, Northern Colorado's 11 triples on the season are the second-most in the conference. Kubo's total is also the 16th best in the nation.
With nine home runs on the season, Matt Burkart sits second behind CBU's Damon Keith in the race for the WAC's home run title.
UNC's Buster Posey Collegiate Catcher of the Year nominee Josh Glenn continues to deliver at the plate. With 39 RBI in 2021, Glenn ranks third in the conference, first in RBI per game at 1.03.
Fans would be hard-pressed to find something Northern Colorado iron man Sam Leach hasn't done on the baseball diamond this season. With three wins on the mound in 2021, Leach has also recorded eight two-hit games, two three-hit games and boasted a 17-game hit streak earlier this season.
SCOUTING THE VAQUEROS
After dropping three of four games to New Mexico State, UTRGV bounced right back against in-state foe Tarleton, winning three of the four matchups.
Head coach Derek Matlock has five of his hitters batting over .290 this season, including Andy Atwood (.340). Atwood not only leads the team in batting average but has also collected a team-best 36 runs, eight home runs and 89 total bases.
The Vaqueros' ace Kevin Stevens (8-4) enters the weekend with a 3.20 ERA and is fourth in the WAC in strikeouts with 70. Meanwhile, Chase Bridges has been one of the most consistent relief pitchers for UTRGV, grabbing five wins and two saves with a 3.66 ERA in 16 appearances.
A LOOK AHEAD.
Northern Colorado will end its regular season on the road with a trip to St. George Utah to face Dixie State. The first of four games is set to begin on Friday, May 20.
