Wildcats take final regular-season game over Bears
4/11/2021 2:41:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Two unanswered goals from the home side spoiled UNC's aspirations and gave the Wildcats a 2-1 victory.
WSU sprinted out of the gates, pushing high up the pitch early. The Wildcats forced four corner kicks in the first eight minutes.
UNC's dominant back four had answers to all of Weber's questions, though. Holding off the pressure in the first 15 minutes, the Bears were able to settle into the game and find attacking threats in the channels through Kaitlyn Meeder and Kalen Niedling.
Soon, Northern Colorado was the one asking the questions themselves.
In the 24th minute and on UNC's first corner kick of the game, Olivia Seddon sent a dangerous ball into the box that found its way onto the right foot of Taylor Bray who wasn't going to miss from close range.15' | @NiedlingKalen with a wonderful ball from the left! Holding on to the 1-0 lead, the Bears nearly saw out the first 45 minutes of play. However, with just over three minutes left in the half, Weber State earned a penalty and tucked it away to tie the game at 1 at the break.24' | GOAL!!!! @Liv_Seddon16 with an excellent corner and @maddiebarkow pokes it in!#BearsStrong #BigSkySoccer pic.twitter.com/Xp9MDohNLj

Both teams were looking for the go-ahead goal in the second half.
The Bears created several chances from set-pieces and Morgan Bury, in goal for Franza, made a few key saves to keep the game tied.
Weber State found a gap through the defense in the 68th minute, capitalizing on a rare Northern Colorado miscue and scored to take its first lead of the weekend.29' | Shot from distance for Weber but @ashcfranza is there to make the save!#BearsStrong #BigSkySoccer pic.twitter.com/kgSIVLAddT

UNC fought until the bitter end. The Bears rattled off eight shots in the second period alone, including three on goal.
Even in the 89th minute, it seemed there was a seal on goal as Northern Colorado did everything but score.
Time inevitably ran out on Sunday but all eyes turn towards the Big Sky Championship on Thursday where Barrera and the Bears will get a chance to defend its 2019 title.89' | HOW!?!?!?#BearsStrong #BigSkySoccer pic.twitter.com/6TDFOfJ4SZ

What They Said
Head Coach, Tim Barrera
"We didn't play very well in the first 45 minutes but we created some good chances and almost went into to halftime with the lead. In the second half, I thought we played a bit more balanced and created some good opportunities. Ultimately, it just wasn't our day. We'll look forward to getting rested and ready to go for Thursday."
Game Notes
- Olivia Seddon notched her third assist of the year.
- Taylor Bray tallied her first goal of the season
- Bears fans welcomed the sight of the return of Lexi Pulley who left the first game against NAU with injury.
