Jackson Hemauer, Mosha Schwartz and Alan Clothier qualify for NCAA Championships
TULSA, Okla. – A day after upsetting the second and third seed to reach the championships of the 174-pound bracket, Jackson Hemauer put up a good fight but fell to top seed Demetrius Romero in the championship match Saturday night 6-2.
Hemauer becomes the third Bear to finish second at the Big 12 Championships since the program joined the conference in 2015. He joins Mosha Schwartz (133) in 2020 and Dylan Gabel (184) in 2018.
He is one of three Bears who punched their ticket to the NCAA Championships in two weeks in St. Louis. Schwartz and Alan Clothier did so in the morning session reaching the consolation finals.
Northern Colorado finished seventh in the team standings with 70.5 points.
It was a busy morning for UNC as they had six wrestlers competing in the wrestle back round.
Schwartz defeated Haiden Dury for the second time in the championship, this by 14-4 major decision. He ended up taking fourth place as seventh-seed Zach Redding of Iowa State defeated Schwartz in the third place match.
Alan Clothier earned his second straight trip to the NCAAs with his major decision, 13-2, of Darrien Roberts of Oklahoma. Like Schwartz, Clothier took fourth place as he was defeated by No. 3 seed Dakota Geer of Oklahoma State 7-1.
Five Bears competed in the seventh place matches in Jace Koelzer (125), Chris Sandoval (141), Jordan Robison (165), Jacob Seely (197) and Dalton Robertson (HWT). Sandoval and Robison took seventh place with the remainder earning eighth.
Sandoval won by medical forfeit by Oklahoma State's Kaden Gefeller, while Robison won in one of the most exciting matches of the morning. He and Koy Wilkinson of Utah Valley were deadlocked at on and ended up in extra periods. Robison won with an escape with 10 seconds left in tiebreaker-2 to earn the 3-2 win.
Dalton Robertson had an eventful seventh place match against Michael Wolfgram of West Virginia. The match between the heavyweights featured three takedowns, three reversals and a four-point nearfall. Wolfgram edged out Robertson by the score of 10-8.
What's Ahead
With Hemauer, Schwartz and Clothier already qualified for the NCAA Championships, Northern Colorado will wait to hear who else will be headed to St. Louis with them. The NCAA Selection Show will air on March 10 at 4 pm MT on NCAA.com.
