Two of UNC's three NCAA qualifiers continue their season Friday
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – A pair of Bears are still alive and wrestling after day one of the NCAA Wrestling Championships. Alan Clothier (184) and Jackson Hemauer (174) will compete in the second consolation round of 16 Friday morning.
"We were able to advance two of our three competitors to day 2 today," said head coach Troy Nickerson. "That is where All-American honors are earned. Every match from here on out will be a war. We are in good spirits and reach to go."
Clothier guaranteed his season would be extended by a day when he defeated No. 15 Lance Malczewski of Michigan State by decision 8-3 in the opening round. He grabbed the early lead at 3-2 after the first period with a takedown and escape following a reversal. The second period was the difference maker with a takedown and two-point nearfall to go up 7-3.
In the championship round of 16, Clothier dropped a tough battle to No. 2 Trent Hidlay of North Carolina State 20-5.
Hemauer dropped his opening round match to No. 20 Trent Munoz of Arizona State 6-2. He recorded a pair of escapes but was unable to get an important takedown in the third period. Heemauer advanced in the consolation bracket as No. 29 Lance Runyon of Northern Iowa medically forfeited.
Clothier will face No. 16 Max Lyon of Purdue, while Hemauer will also continue his season on Friday when he faces No. 14 Hayden Hastings of Wyoming. Hemauer defeated Hastings two weeks ago at the Big 12 Championships 4-3.
UNC's third NCAA qualifier Mosha Schwartz (133) saw his season end on Thursday. Schwartz fell to Wisconsin's No. 18 Kyle Burwik at 4:38 before losing by decision to No. 31 Sean Carter of Appalachian State 8-6.
Friday's action begins once again at 9 am. The ESPN family of networks will carry all of the coverage of the NCAA Championships.
