GREELEY, Colo. – Picture-perfect weather signaled a picture-perfect day for Northern Colorado Baseball as they went on to capture its first home win of the season, 8-4, over North Dakota State.
Head coach Carl Iwasaki couldn't have dreamed of a better start from the Bears. Following a Dylan Bowers strikeout to close out the top half of the first, Jake Gitter rocketed a ball over the right-field fence to lead off the bottom half, on a 3-0 count no less.
Aiden Leahy matched Gitter's home run effort an inning later. Smashing one to left, Leahy doubled UNC's advantage, giving valuable run support to starting pitcher Dylan Bowers.
Northern Colorado added to its cushion in the fourth, capitalizing on two big swings from Shaydon Kubo and Jake Gitter. Gitter's RBI double gave the centerfielder two RBI for the day and gifted the bears a 4-1 lead.
North Dakota State countered for two runs on a hit and three walks in the top of the sixth to close the gap, putting the pressure on Bowers and the Bears.
UNC threatened in the bottom half before the Bison doubled-up Leahy on a long fly ball to right field.
NDSU managed to tie it up in the seventh on one hit and a couple of walks from Bowers.
The seventh inning singled the last for starter. In total, Bowers went six and a third innings, struck out nine and gave up four runs.
The tie wouldn't last long, though. After Kubo reached first on a dropped third strike, Jake Gitter blasted his second homer of the day and fifth of the season to put UNC on top, 6-4.
The Bears weren't done there.
Two more runs came across on a sacrifice fly from Josh Glenn and an RBI groundout from Ben McKay, giving reliever Sam Wyatt four runs to play with six outs remaining.
Iain Isdale came on in relief to finish off the Bison in the 9th. He might've had the heart rates racing for a few Bears fans when he loaded the bases but quickly silenced the North Dakota State hopeful with a strikeout to end the game.
