Comeback effort falls just short for men's basketball
3/11/2021 2:39:00 PM | Men's Basketball
UNC men's basketball season ended against Southern Utah on Thursday
BOISE, Idaho – The Bears never said die, but the comeback effort fell short Thursday afternoon.
Northern Colorado's season came to an end with a 91-83 loss to top seed Southern Utah.
Bodie Hume had another 30-point performance while Daylen Kountz scored 22 and Kur Jockuch had his sixth straight double-double.
The Bears started the game where they left off from Wednesday morning burning down the nets with their shooting to build a nine-point lead over Southern Utah. The T-Birds responded with a full-court press that bothered the Bears and helped SUU to go on a 15-0 run to gain the lead and take it into the half 46-34.
SUU's lead grew to as much as 16 with 8:22 left, but UNC never waved the white flag. A quick five-point spurt by Northern Colorado cut the deficit down to single digits. Then UNC's defense kicked in.
The Bears held SUU without a field goal for the final 6:55 of the game helping them get within four of the T-Birds. Hume, Kountz and Tre'Shon Smoots each connected from downtown as the Bears went on an 11-4 run to be within four with 1:55 left.
Northern Colorado had multiple attempts to cut the game to a one possession game, but the ball just wouldn't fall and Southern Utah secured the win at the free throw line.
Stat of the Game
Southern Utah turned up the pressure during the latter half of the first half and never turned it off leading to 18 UNC turnovers. SUU scored 22 points off those Bear turnovers.
